Granular activated carbon (GAC) filters are used to remove chlorine, pesticides and organics from water. The removal of these type of compounds often improves the taste and odour of the water. There are various different types of carbon but natural coconut shell carbon is deemed one of the best all round performers. When GAC is pressed with a mesh the carbon filter becomes a "block" which both adsorbs the chemicals and acts as a physical sediment filter.

Sediment filter cartridges are a cost effective approach to removing particulates in water (turbidity) 0.5 micron and above (bacteria are 0.5 to 5 micron, soils typically 1 to 100 micron). There is often a balance to be taken on choosing a filter which removes very small particles with one which can handle faster flows.
